Rep. Steve King comments on Oil and Gas Bills
March 23, 2007 Contact: Steve King For Immediate Release (970) 314-8753 MEDIA ADVISORY/COLUMN MATERIAL State Representative Steve King Comments on Oil & Gas Development There are at least 10 bills in the legislature about oil & gas development DENVER , CO -- State Representative Steve King-R (HD-54) releases the following statement about oil & gas development and the numerous bills in the legislature that address the energy debate. Those bills are: HB 07-1142, HB 07-115, HB 07-1180, HB 07-1223, HB 07-1252, HB 07-1268, HB 07-1298, HB 07-1309, HB 07-1341, and SB 07-121. At a time when there is a great deal of focus on renewable energy and making the state of Colorado the renewable energy capital of this natiom, I am working very hard to make sure an industry that supports 70,000 Colorado jobs and has a payroll of four billion dollars while generating in excess of twenty billion in economic activity does not die the death of a 1,000 cuts. The Colorado House of Representatives currently has ten or more pieces of legislation awaiting action that would have an impact greater or smaller on the oil and gas industry of Colorado. While one piece of legislation may not have a serious impact on the industry, I worry that the cumulative effect of each additional legislative change could degrade the business climate for future oil and gas investment in our great state. Just in the last eight years, Mesa County has received $23,270,721.70, in energy and mineral impact assistance with Delta County receiving $14,468, 062.11. All counties in our state have received a portion of the combined amount of $450,195, 623.09, in Energy Impact Assistance grant money. That's right now, real money, with real jobs and real lives committed to an industry that is critical to our economy and our quality of life. Yes, I said quality of life while talking about the oil and gas industry. Those two are not mutually exclusive, like other energy blessings if recovered properly and leveraged to our benefit. That is money available for health care, K-12 education, higher education, and a number of other social and economic issues. I have heard it said, "get on board Colorado 's Green Train or get the hell off the tracks." I hope we as a state can step back from this type of sensationalism and look at all of our energy blessings in order to leverage those resources for the benefit of this and future generations. King currently sits on the Judiciary committee and the Business Affairs and Labor committee. ###
